Dressing for a Baptism

One of the most important events in any person’s life, and one even for their parents, is when a child is baptized. This is a symbolic and sentimental day that will be remembered for years to come. Many family members and friends will attend the event to mark and celebrate the day with the kid’s parents. It is traditional for infants and small children to wear white gowns or dressy clothes. Family members and godparents tend to wear more formal clothes to express the importance of the occasion.
Although there are many different practices and traditions used in a baptism, how the child dresses is just as important due to the fact that it’s an important day and there will be many photos taken to commemorate the event. If a child is not clothed correctly, it will not be as special and might not be as highly regarded by the child or other family and friends that attend.
Different churches have different degrees of apparel guidelines for parents, god parents and kids. It is traditional for the child to put on a white gown, although modern baptism attire includes christening sets with jumpsuits, suits, dresses, blankets, sweaters and booties. The traditional cathedral-length baptism outfit for girls and boys extends below the feet for a more dramatic look. The church may provide a white over-garment which is used symbolically during the ceremony.

When choosing a gown, it is important to look for designer baptism wear for girls and heirloom baptism gowns for the boys. The gowns are quite popular when a child is baptized and are formal enough to help the child dress appropriately on this special day. Many of the gowns come in ivory and white, and are embellished with lace, ruffles, ribbon and embroidery. They normally include a hat or cap for the kid’s head. The length of the gown depends on one’s preference, but many are made a foot or longer beyond the kid’s feet.
Another reason these outfits are so important is that many parents normally preserve the gown that their baby wears when they are baptized. This is similar to when brides save their wedding dresses or when mothers keep clothing from when their child was brought home from the hospital. This outfit is sentimental and quite meaningful for the parents, so it’s important to choose something formal and beautiful, since it’s a landmark event.
With girls, it is a good idea to adorn their heads with a white or ivorybonnet to match their dresses. The parents can even accessorize withelastic headbands which matches the gown. With boys, it is very common to have them put on a coordinating cap, but one which do not have ruffles or any fancy lace. Plain ivory  or whitemaybe with a pastel band in order to coordinate with any trim on the gown work well with their christening gowns.
Parents can take care of these outfits by keeping them in a frame, or just by keeping them in a durable muslin bag to hang in the closet. This will nicely showcase the gown, while still preserving its material and maintaining it in pristine condition. This will allow it to be enjoyed by both the child and the parents for years to come.
