Top tips for avoiding damaging your hair

Posted on April 25, 2022 at 9:52 pm

One of the many causes of damage and dryness to your hair is over exposure to heat treatments. Now this doesn’t mean the sauna or steam room, but your hair dryer, curlers and straighteners. These items work at high levels of heat to style your hair for quick long lasting effects but they cause the hair to dehydrate making it more brittle and prone to breakage. The best way to limit this type of damage is to use a good heat protection spray and ensure that you don’t style your hair with hot tools too much.

Another hair no-no is scrapping it up into tight ponytails or buns. This puts extra stress on the hair and can result in breakage and split ends. It’s much better to opt for looser styles and avoid hair snagging on tight elastic bands.

Over processing the hair either with hair dye or bleach can also be disastrous for our locks and can cause irreversible damage making your break off and be extremely dry.

It’s always advisable to have any colours done by a professional who can ensure that your hair keeps its healthy appearance even through processing. If in doubt book in a consultation and have a chat with a reputable hairdresser for professional advice.

How to get rid of that brassy colour from your hair

Posted on January 17, 2022 at 4:15 pm

If you often have your hair bleached and have either an all over bleach or highlights you may find that sometimes they look a like yellow or brassy. It may be that when they were first bleached you didn’t have a toner, or it has washed out or maybe overtime it seems to get more and more brassy. Don’t despair if this is the case as often there are some things you can do very easily that will make a big difference.

When trying to correct a colour out of your hair you first need to discover what colour is opposite it on the colour wheel. In this case the colours yellow and orange are opposite purple or blue. That means that purple or blue will cancel out the other tones. You can opt for a salon tonner to correct this but you may not have time to have that done. If this is the case, then you can often improve the look of it by using a purple or blue shampoo. There are various ones available to buy and it is advisable to follow the instructions carefully on the back of the bottle. Some of them can be quite strong so you may need to wear gloves to apply it to avoid your hands becoming stained.

Do you fancy a change of hair style?

Posted on October 22, 2021 at 6:12 am

Over the last couple of years many of us have had times when we have had to let our hair go. Hairdressers were one of the longest businesses to stay shut during the lockdowns and many people had to either decide to leave their hair as it was or try and dye / cut it themselves. If you had hair extensions Zion’s in over lockdown then you may of had to try and remove them yourself as left too long can start to cause damage to your hair.

It is nice to have a change sometimes with your hair. Your hair is your crown, or so they say and so you need to look after it. You do need to ensure that you maintain your hair properly to ensure that you don’t get breakages or hair falling out. This is why it is always better to go to a salon to get them to colour your hair for you as they are specially trained.

As we go in to winter you may want to add some darker tones to your hair or even some reds. These colours can work well with many different complexions. There are some great apps available where you can see what you would look like with different hair colours and styles.

How much does it cost for hair extensions and are they worth it?

Posted on April 30, 2021 at 9:36 pm

Hair extensions have been around for a good number of years now, but each year they get better and better and the more the quality is improved the more people want to have them. One of the things that puts many people off having extensions is the damage they can cause to your hair. It is important if you choose to have hair extensions in that you keep up with the maintenance. This will protect your hair and ensure that the extensions last as long as possible. If you have your natural hair dyed or bleached then you will need to continue to have this done when you have extensions in. Often you can have your hair coloured at the same time as the maintenance needs to be done.

Hair extensions are not cheap and you have to factor in the cost initially as well as the ongoing maintenance cost. This will usually be on top of your normal hair care costs. How often you need to have your extensions maintained can vary depending on the type of extensions you have and how you look after them but often people find they need to go about every 8 weeks. If you leave it longer – up to 12 weeks you may find that you actually have to pay more for the maintenance as it is more work the longer they are left.

During lockdown lots of people struggled with hair extensions as they were not able to get into the hairdressers to have them maintained. All of us are hopefully that we will not have to go into another lock down again, and so it should be quite safe to have them done.

If you have never had extensions in before then it might be a good idea to get some clip in ones and try them first. You can then see what you think about the length of your hair and whether you think they will be suitable for you.

Hair extensions can give lots of people the confidence that they are looking for. It can help you feel happy with your hair and is also a great option for people who have experienced hair loss due to treatment or who cannot grow their hair easily. If you are considering extensions, be sure to choose a reputable hair dresser and one that has plenty of experience and good reviews.

Have you got your hair appointment booked?

Posted on March 25, 2021 at 11:19 am

With the government announcing that hairdressers can finally reopen on the 12th April, many of us are desperately booking appointments. For many of us, it has been months since we have been able to visit the hairdressers and this may mean your hair is in real need of a good cut and that your roots are halfway down your head.

With summer on its way, you may decide that you want a different sort of cut this time. Often people tend to go a little lighter in the summer as the sun will naturally lighten hair anyway. If you are blonde, you may decide to have a few more highlights put in or even to go for a tint such as apostle purple or pink.

When it comes to choosing your hairdresser, it is important that you find someone you can trust. Telling them the sorts of styles and colours you like is a great idea but try and listen to their advice too, after all they are the experts and will know what works and what doesn’t. I you want a cut but are worried about having too much taken off, ask them to take a smaller amount first and so you can see before they take any more.
