When lots of
people think about Christin’s they think of babies, but very often the child who
is to be christened can be older. This may be because the family only decided
recently to have them christened or maybe they were waiting until their sibling
had been born to have them both christened at the same time.
When looking
for outfits for older boys and girls you may steer a little further away that
the traditional type. Boys may wear a suit and often older girls where a white
dress. If you really want to be savvy with your money, you may even get them a
dress that they can wear again afterwards to parties.
Some parents
make their child’s christening outfits out of their wedding dress. This has
been an ongoing tradition for some time now. For older boys, who may not feel comfortable
wearing a dress, they may have a tie or cravat made from their mothers wedding
dress instead of a whole outfit.
When it comes
to christenings, don’t get hung up on the outfit. The outfit is only a small
part of it. IF you are struggling for ideas then why not visit a specialist christening
shop where they will be able to show you a range of different outfit options
that are suitable for children of all ages.

A child’s
christening is a very special moment and often people are invited to celebrate
with the child and their parents or carers. It is tradition that people buy the
child a gift when it is their christening. Some people give them money or gifts
of teddies or toys etc others prefer to go with something a little more
traditional. Some of the most common types of gifts for a christening are
jewellery such as bracelets, silver or ceramic money boxes, bibles or silverware.
Unless you
go to a gift show or jewellers that sell christening gifts you may struggle to
find them in usually high street shops. The best way to find the gift you want
it to have a look online where you will often have a lot more choice.
If you are ordering online then be sure to allow plenty of time for it to arrive. Ideally, you want to allow enough time to check the item over and make sure it is what you want. If it is not then you still have enough time to order something else or return the item for a replacement.

In Ireland there is an old tradition concerning wedding dresses and christening gowns. It is said that when a daughter is due to be christen, the christening gown should be made from part of the mothers wedding dress such as the veil of the lace. It also states that when that daughter gets married part of the christening gown should then be resewn in to the child’s wedding dress when they get married.
Like many traditions there are some variations of this. Some people believe that the mother should make the christening dress from her wedding dress and others do not mind who does it as long as part of the dress is used. Also instead of getting part of the christening dress resewn in to the wedding dress, some believe that the christening dress that has been made should remain as is and then that would get passed down through the generations.

If your little one’s Christening is coming up, you’ll be looking to choose the right outfit. Whether you’re looking for something contemporary or a traditional Christening dress, there’s options to suit any child and to match your own tastes, too. Your little boy or girl will look beautiful on their big day, and the right gown can be passed down through your family for generations to come.
What colour should the dress be?
If you’re looking for a classic traditional gown for a Church ceremony, you’ll want a white dress. In the Christian faith, white symbolises purity and the new life born into the Church. Going for a more modern naming ceremony rather than a religious rite? You can choose from a wide range of colours for the outfit: pink and blue are common choices for baby girls and boys. If you’re worried about putting white on a baby, ivory is very similar while being more forgiving when it comes to stains. (more…)

There are several little known facts regarding the history of christening gowns and their origins that many individuals may find to be interesting.
They are often regarded as the best outfit for a baby to wear on what may be one of life’s greatest occasions. A christening is by tradition, a function that marks the birth of the baby and it is held in a church. It is also considered to be a welcoming of the baby into the church. On these occasions the outfit is usually decorated with embroidery, lace and ribbons. The gown will be worn by baby girls and boys during the church christening function. Booties, bonnets and blankets that have been made to match would also be worn.
Since the 1700’s newborn babies have worn this very special gown on the very special day of their baptism. This dress is meant to reflect the importance of the baptism event and is usually made of silk or satin. The style which has remained very much the same for ages, low neck, short sleeves and short bodice on a long slip dress, is still preferred today. According to church customs this gown is white in colour and represents the innocence and purity of those who wear it. (more…)
